How To Upload Images to Social Media Platforms

While many modern cameras have integrated cloud web browsing technology that allows users to directly share images to social media, most will be using more traditional methods to share snapshots to platforms like Instagram, Facebook, Twitter and Pinterest. While the mobile phone is the most used medium by which images are posted to these services, sometimes you may wish to share a particular well taken or heavily edited image. This article will break the process of posting an image captured on a camera down step by step.

Moving images from Camera to Computer

The first stage in the process is to move the captured images from the camera to the computer. Digital cameras make this process incredibly easy thanks to the inclusion of USB technology that allows for the sharing of data from the camera to the computer. For this to work, you would simply connect the USB cable to the camera and the computer and select the appropriate on screen dialogues.

Another option may be to use a card reader. A card reader allows a computer to access data stored on the memory card within the camera. This is also controlled with a USB but requires no camera or battery power. When you wish to download photos, simply eject the memory card and insert into the USB card reader.

As mentioned previously, integrated technology has also allowed for the wireless transfer of data from camera devices to computers. This is present in cameras that include wifi and bluetooth technology. This simplifies the process by eliminating the need for peripheral elements like USB cables and card readers.

Uploading to Instagram

This is perhaps the most laborious process, as instagram does not currently have an official method by which pictures can be posted via a computer. A surefire method of uploading would be found by moving the image file from the camera to a computer, before sending it on to the mobile phone in a ready to post format. At this point, you would simply upload the image as normal by navigating to the ‘all in one’ page and selecting the choice of post you wish to make.

Uploading to Facebook

Facebook has made the process of sharing images much easier, with the platform having a method to upload from ‘my computer’. In order to post, simply navigate to the home screen of facebook and find the status bar. This will include the option to upload photos/videos. Selecting this allows for the selection of images and videos from the computer. These can then be subject to basic editing, tagging, and descriptive text.

Uploading to Twitter

Similarly to Facebook, Twitter has also provided a native method by which images and videos can be shared via the computer. This is done by navigating to the home page and finding the ‘compose tweet’ option. This will create a menu that allows for the selection of images, via a small picturebox ‘media’ icon. This will bring up the computer file explorer which allows for the selection of images and videos that can be posted at the click of the ‘tweet’ button.

Uploading to Pinterest

Similarly to Facebook and Twitter, Pinterest allows users to upload directly from a computer. In order to do this, users navigate to ‘create a pin’ and upload image files taken from the file explorer menu. These images can then be titled, labelled with a link or description, and then saved to a new or existing board for access.
