The Sony a6000 is a mirrorless interchangeable lens camera released all the way back in February 2014. Yes, 2014! Obviously you’re now thinking “well why would I bloody buy that then? Do you take me for a FOOL?” And to that I say – No I do not, and all will be revealed in this article. Yes, the a6000 may be 7 years old, but there’s a reason that it has been called the best-selling mirrorless camera of all time – Well, 3 reasons according to this blog.
1. SIZE
And so, the first reason that the a6000 would make a perfect first camera is ITS SIZE. The a6000 body measures 120 x 67 x 45mm and weighs just 344g. To give you a sense of how light this thing is, imagine holding a 500g bag of sugar. Pretty light, right? Now imagine pouring out 156g of the sugar and voila! You have the sony a6000. Was that a bad analogy? That’s not the point. The light weight and small dimensions of this camera means it is so easy to travel with, especially if you need to keep luggage to a minimum. Likewise, you won’t get tired of holding it for long shoots. When you’re first starting out in photography it can be quite daunting whipping out your camera and shooting – But having a small camera means drawing less attention to yourself, putting you at ease and allowing you to focus on getting the shot. As the saying goes, good things come in small packages – Just ask my girlfriend!… She owns a sonyA6000.
2. QUALITY
Despite its age, the quality of the a6000 still stands up today. The crop sensor has 24 megapixels, and while megapixel count does not necessarily mean high quality, it is comforting to know that this is the same number of megapixels as on the pricey Sony a7iii. ISO is a standard 100 – 25600 which can expand to 51200, and video can be shot in Full HD, 1920 x 1080. If video is going to be your main use and you want 4K resolution, then this is not the camera for you. However, if you focus mainly on photography, and aren’t put off by not having 4K video, then the Sony a6000 offers fantastic quality for the price. It’s not going to perform as well in low light situations as an a7iii would, but in normal conditions you can still get really sharp images, especially if you use some of the great prime lenses that work with its crop sensor. The sony a6000 also boasts 11fps shooting, however there is no weather sealing so you will need to be careful and buy a waterproof coat for this camera. I use this, and my sonya6000 has survived waterfalls in Iceland and thunderstorms in Scotland because of it.
3. PRICE
To top off the convenient size and high-quality images of the sony a6000, it costs only £479 pounds right now with a lens kit! This is significantly cheaper than its RRP of £669 and is the cherry on top of why you should buy this incredible cake – I mean camera. Spending less on the camera means having even more money to spend on lenses and accessories, which can conveniently be found here.
And there you have it. 3 reasons why the sony a6000 is a great choice for your first camera. If you’re still not convinced then I don’t know what else to say. Perhaps it is best said in a GIF that doesn’t completely go with the topic of the blog?
